Myths and facts about car washes

Myths and facts about car washes

Myth or fact? A contactless car wash is better for the color of your car.

Fact. A “contactless” car wash is one that uses chemicals and high-pressure water to clean the car – as opposed to an automatic car wash that uses rotating brushes or soft cloths. In theory, both are able to do the desired work. But the truth lies in the details. If your car is really dirty, a contactless car wash may not be enough to clean it completely. However, an ordinary car wash with worn brushes or dirty cloths can damage your car – leaving small scratches in the paintwork, transferring dirt from other vehicles.

Before washing the car, Consumer Reports recommends looking at the brushes at the automatic car wash to see if they look dirty or worn out. This may indicate a poorly maintained plant. And if you use contactless washing, it is recommended to change it from time to time with hand washing so that your car is completely clean.

Myth or fact? Washing the running gear can prevent rusting.

Fact. When choosing a chassis detergent, the bottom of your car will be rinsed with a jet of high-pressure water. The purpose of this wash is to remove mud, salt or sand that can get into hard-to-reach places in your vehicle. Trapped moisture and corrosive materials such as road salt can cause your car to rust, so it’s a good idea to opt for chassis washing – especially if you’re driving in the snow in winter. It is not necessary to choose this option every time, but experts at Consumer Reports recommend washing the chassis at least once a season.

Myth or fact? Dish soap is safe to use for your car.
Myth. A common myth about car washes is that the use of dishwashing detergent works as well as special auto chemistry. However, experts agree that dish soap is best left in the kitchen. This is because the harsh chemicals in dishwashes will not only remove dirt – they will also remove your car’s paint from the protective wax coating. In turn, specialized auto chemistry is specially designed to remove dirt without removing wax and sealants from the paint surface.
